Fast charging, solid-state scale-up, and a supply chain in motion

MarketSolid-stateSupply chain

Two things moved in parallel this spring: charge rates climbed fast enough to make interfacial resistance the limiting factor, and solid-state programmes started publishing dates instead of ambitions.

The charging race

BYD's second-generation Blade claims a 10–70% charge in five minutes at 190–210 Wh/kg, alongside a shift toward LMFP and plans for 20,000 fast-charging stations globally within the year. CATL's third-generation Qilin supports 10C, with peaks quoted at 15C, over 1,000 km of range and 255 kg of weight taken out relative to an LFP pack.

Rates like these stop being a cell-chemistry question and become an interface question. At 10C the voltage you lose across the electrode interface dominates everything else.

Solid-state, with dates attached

Developer Target density Timing
Greater Bay Technology 260–500 Wh/kg A-sample out, GWh-scale targeted H2 2026
Samsung SDI ~400 Wh/kg Mass production 2027
Toyota 450–500 Wh/kg Small-scale production 2027–2028

China is expected to issue its first national solid-state battery standard in July 2026 — notable mostly because a standard forces a definition, and a definition ends the practice of calling a semi-solid cell a solid-state one.

Supply chain

The Korean top three fell to 15.0% share, down 2.2 points, while CATL grew to 56.9 GWh, up 13.7%. In North America, roughly 820 GWh of announced gigafactory capacity was postponed or cancelled — at the same time US grid storage installations are tracking toward 60 GWh for the year. Capital is not leaving the sector; it is moving from vehicles to storage.

Patents as strategy

"IP super gap" was the phrase of the season at InterBattery 2026. Samsung SDI reports 1,200 registered US patents and more than 1,100 filings specific to solid-state. Joint licensing vehicles are appearing between major cell makers, which is what a field does when it expects the next decade to be litigated as much as engineered.

Where this points

Every item above converges on the same place: as charge rates rise and electrolytes solidify, the interface between lithium and the current collector stops being an implementation detail and becomes the performance ceiling. Deposition precision at the nanometre scale is how that interface gets controlled.
